Best views in Auckland

top auckland attractions skytower mt eden

Its hard to miss this big needle in the sky during a trip to Auckland, and there is no where better to discover expansive Auckland City than from the Sky Tower. Constructed 1994-1997, the top of the towers antenna measures 328m making it the tallest man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Head to the main viewing platform to get a great view over Auckland City or if you’re a thrill seeker you can take a SkyJump and leap off the tower. Those on a budget can experience views almost as impressive without the cost by heading up Mt Eden (Maungawhau) the most prominent volcanic cone in the Central Auckland Area.

Britomart

One of Auckland's most recent and most popular developments is the Britomart Precinct. Located downtown Auckland City, close to Waldorf StadiumWaldorf Celestion and Waldorf Bankside, Britomart is a hip hub of boutique and designer shopping, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and more. Designed with plenty of places to sit and watch the city go by, with many offices surrounding it and incorporating Britomart Transport Centre, Britomart is a great place to get a feel for Auckland City.

Climb a Volcano

Looking for some active adventure while in Auckland? Look no further than Rangitoto Island, Auckland's Iconic dormant volcano that lies just east of Auckland City within Auckland's Harbour. Hop on a Fullers Ferry from their downtown terminal and be delivered directly to the island. The leisurely tramp up the volcano is suitable for most and follows a varied path of volcanic rock and soil, young native bush shrub and boardwalks. On the way to the summit you can venture inside one of the caves created during the island's eruption roughly 2000 years ago. Once at the top you are rewarded with a wonderful view back towards Auckland City and further east over the harbour and to the Coromandel Peninsula.

K’ Rd

Auckland’s most colourful road, Karangahape Road (K’ Rd) is home to an eclectic mix of cafes, bars, second hand stores, tattoo parlors, shisha bars, strip clubs and more. Head here to get a feel for the cities alternative types. Head to Verona Cafe, K’ Rds most iconic cafe, for great people watching, Little Turkish Cafe for the best kebabs on the street and shisha or Whammy Bar to listen to the city's upcoming bands.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay is one of the closest beaches to the city and is a great spot to cool off on a hot summer's day with a swim overlooking the iconic Rangitoto Island Volcano. With a great playground, water fountain and large park it's great for kids. If you’re sans children you may want to enjoy dinner and a drink at The De Fountain Belgium Beer CafeThe Attic Bar & Restaurant or one of the other great dining choices in Mission Bay.

Ponsonby Central

If you want to experience some of Auckland's best dining, Ponsonby Central is a great little hub of restaurants in the middle of ponsonby rd that has offers something to suit all tastes. We recommend trying Burger Burger for the city's best Burgers, Blue Breeze Inn for their Pork Belly Bao (Finalist, Peugeot People’s Choice Award for Auckland’s favourite dish) or Bedford Soda & Liquor for a tasty cocktail or meatball sub… really everything we have tried here has been good, making Ponsonby Central a foodies dream.

Waiheke Island

No trip to Auckland is complete without a trip to the majestic Waiheke Island. Hop onto a ferry from the downtown Auckland Ferry Terminal and feel instantly relaxed as you are transported to the beautiful Waiheke. Tour wineries, lay on beaches or explore the island on your bike - it’s hard to have a bad time on Waiheke - and if the weather in Auckland is bad, don’t be put off; they say Waiheke has a microclimate that enjoys far more sun than the mainland!
